Anxious wait for Colombia Three release

The Three Irishmen acquitted of training left-wing rebels in Colombia may be released from prison on Wednesday. They are still being held in Modelo jail in Bogota pending a prosecution appeal. The trial of James Monaghan, Niall Connolly and Martin McCauley ended in the city more than eight months ago. They were accused of training Farc rebels and using false documentation.  View more

Sinn Fein is determined to fight the Independent Monitoring Commission and is currently considering fresh legal advice, party president Gerry Adams has said. The party will be having intensive political discussions with the British and Irish Governments, he said. Speaking after meeting the US Special Envoy to the Six Counties Mitchell Reiss, on Tuesday, Mr Adams said he hoped progress could be made whatever public course the government had set itself on.  View more

The inquests into the victims of the 1974 Dublin & Monaghan bombings reopened last Tuesday, 27 April, after a lapse of 30 years. Margaret Urwin of the Justice for the Forgotten group told An Phoblacht that the inquests are expected to continue until May 7. "The Coroner specified that he wanted to hear from all the bereaved families first," Margaret said. "So yesterday and today (Tuesday 27 and Wednesday 28), all the families are up to give evidence about their loved ones deaths."  View more


 
de Brún calls for action to protect asylum seekers

Sinn Féin Assembly member Bairbre de Brún has called for urgent action to be taken to plug a loophole which will see former asylum seekers from the 10 new EU accession states evicted from their accommodation and at least in the short term denied the ability to work legally. Ms de Brún said:"As it currently sits those claiming asylum here come under the jurisdiction of the Home Office in London.  View more

Police in The Village area of south Belfast are investigating the origin of sectarian literature found there. The anti-Catholic leaflets were reportedly delivered to homes in the Sandy Row and Donegall Road areas.  View more

The media just can't make up its mind. For Ireland on Sunday, the IMC report "could destroy Adam's reputation as a statesman", while for the Sunday Times it was like water off a duck's back. The IMC report "would be expected to cause problems for most political leaders, but not Adams", wrote that well known anti-republican, Liam Clarke.  View more

"Spooks, spies and failed politicians", is how Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams described the authors of the report issued by the self-proclaimed 'Independent Monitoring Commission' in the middle of last week. He might well have added 'spoofs' to complete the alliteration, because that is how republicans and many nationalists across Ireland, particularly in the north, will view the report and the IMC.  View more
